I was really inspired by 'The Social Entrepreneur' by Andrew Mawson. It's £5.99 from Amazon, well worth a read.

Looks pretty interesting and he's probably got a point.

Went to one of the Business Link pre-start workshops on Tuesday. Was pretty good - and might get me going with a couple of ideas I've got knocking around.

The guy who did the workshop recommended a book - The E myth - Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It: Michael E. Gerber.

Haven't read it yet but I'll probably check it out.

I have read it and its amazing!! i didnt want to put all my views up here untill a few others added theirs. To sumaries the book "The System is the solution" I.e if you can create a system for everything you can replicate in anywhere perfectly- without being there.
Hence Mc Donalds has an amazing system. But if you left it in the hands of managers etc the odds are that the majority of Mc Donalds would fail- they wouldnt know where to setup, how long to cook the burgers for, how often things should get cleaned and how many staff u need during peak hours etc.
So yeah its good. I'm not big enough to prove The system is the solution just yet. But its makes sense and i can feel it in my gut. Thats why im creating blue print user manuels for everything. Even if you own a cake shop, your an electrician etc once you can document every process in your business oyu can then seek to improve it and if you choose to replicate it in other shops, or through employees you take on. Anyone got proof the system is or is not the solution??

Mick Jackson recommended 'Banker to the Poor' by Mohammed Yunus (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Banker-Poor-Story-Grameen-Bank/dp/185410924...). I'm not very far into it, but I'd thoroughly recommend it.

I really enjoyed reading Richard Branson's most recent book, Business Stripped Bare: Adventures of a Global Entrepreneur. A very inspiring book, especially if you want to do something to benefit others in the course of running your own businesses.
